about

In Taiwan, Mazu is known as the “Goddess of the Sea”. She is believed to have been a girl from a small fishing village in Fujian, China. Legend has it that she used her spiritual powers to rescue people when their boat was caught in a typhoon. Immigrants brought the Mazu religion to Taiwan. She is viewed as the guardian of this island nation, and the spiritual symbol of love and compassion.

Mazu is Taiwan's leading Goddess. The Mazu Pilgrimage is like an enormous birthday celebration. It lasts over a week, covers hundreds of kilometers, and draws thousands of pilgrims, and is considered one of the world’s three greatest reli¬gious celebrations.

This is the first release of this mystical new song written by Mia.
(All the other songs were written by Scott and have been previously released in their original version on other albums)

Mia wrote this about her creative intention:

"I tried to bring this folk-religion story and ceremony alive in an artistic way. It has a feeling of the ocean and trance energy in vocals and instruments. It’s powerful and tender at the same time, with mothering energy."

Mia created her own language specific for this song. This is something she does for most AMS compositions, which are either totally created language or use ancient dialects indirectly to create "in the style of". Often listeners will ask Mia "what language are you singing in?" Some think it must be Taiwanese since they don't know what that sounds like anyway.

Mia writes:

"In this album, I use my own creative language in most of songs. “Crying Song” and “First Thunder of Spring” also use Taiwanese language in a poetic story telling way.

Why use my own creative language?
*To create an open space for the imagination.
*To express the subtle, real and rich emotion in a way that opens universal understanding, not limited to regional language.
*For reaching these goals, I have developed the strength of quite a large vocal range, the diverse use of resonance chambers and rich vowel textures.
*I apply my experience of singing techniques from folk, opera, classical and experimental music to create new styles of composition. The purpose is to serve the artistic expression, not to identify a specific technique or music category."
